Although originally developed in 1975, this pistol became the standard US service sidearm in 1985, designated M9, to replace the M1911. Among the many police and miltary forces using variants of this weapon are special forces in Albania, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Pakistan and it is also the standard issue pistol of the French Military (French variant PAMAS G1).
Starting in late 2017 the US military is replacing the Beretta 92 over a period of 10 years with the Sig Sauer P320, designated M17 for fullsize and M18 for carry.
